The first twelve years are the hardest. That is true of most clubs and
Knocknaheeny Celtic, founded in 1981, are no exception. They have won no trophies but secretary Steve McCarthy measures success by the commitment of the players and supporters over the years.
Not that Knocknaheeny haven't progressed since their debut in the 3rd division of the AUL. They have twice won promotion and now play in the first division, the latest step-up coming in 1991/2 when they finished second to Boher Celtic in Two A.
McCarthy and Donie Quirke, both still active in the club, were founder
members. Timmy McCarthy and Pat O'Connor were also involved at the time.
Survival has been the name of the game since then and Steve wryly points out that their two most recent Players of the Year recipients have been snapped up by bigger neighbouring clubs.
But McCarthy and Quirke, with community backing and support from Kay
O'Mahony's, have stuck at it. Steve also acts as team manager and Quirke is one of his forwards. Kevin Twomey, Neil Long, and Trevor Buckley (who doubles as reserve keeper) also play upfront.
The Celtics score quite a few goals from midfield, Micky Crinnion and Declan Sheehan prominent in that department. The other regular midfielders are Tony Fenton and Mark Shinkwin.
Martin Freyne, another of the original players, lines out between the sticks. Right full Larry Shinkwin skippers the team and the other defenders are Mark Barry, Brian McSweeney, Paul Duggan, and Willie Coleman.
McCarthy's fellow officers are Quirke (treasurer), Jerry Walsh (Chairman), and Ria Shinkwin (assistant treasurer). The club had a youths team a few seasons back but feel that the committee must be strengthened if they are to enter underage sides in the future. Anyone willing to help is welcome at the club's home games in Kilmore Road.
