MACROOM AUG 1995

MACROOM, AUL 1 CHAMPS 94/95:

Manager Willie O'Riordan guided his Macroom side through a mid

season nightmare that threatened to wreck their title dream in

AUL 1. That bad spell saw just two points collected from eight

but Willie worked the magic; the confidence returned and a

magnificent finishing run saw the title clinched.

The Mid Cork side won their final eight matches, scoring 27 and

conceding just five goals, to leave main rivals Albert Rovers and

Killowen trailing.

Macroom, beaten last season in the final of the St Michael Cup,

didn't have much luck in the knockout competitions this term.

But they did distinguish themselves in the Cork Examiner Munster

Junior Cup. They reached the open draw but found Clonmel Town,

one of the top sides in Munster, just a little too strong.

The side was skippered by Darren Ring, one of the younger

members. J. J. Murphy has been around while - this is his 17th

season - but he showed his scoring touch was as good as ever and

was top marksman with 24 goals.
