MACROOM IN MUNSTER ACTION




Macroom is the place to be on Sunday afternoon (kick off 2.30) when the local Premier outfit taken on Waterford visitors De la Salle in the 4th round of the Munster Junior Cup. Macroom, third in the AUL Premier League but inexperienced at this level, can be relied on to give a good account of themselves.



Willie O'Riordan is the Macroom manager and his assistant is Con Foley. The side is captained by Darren Ring and will be looking to the likes of leading scorers William O'Riordan and Red Kirby to give the visitors the blues.



De La Salle certainly had the blues last weekend when they bowed out of the FAI Junior Cup away to Kerry outfit St Brendan's Park. But, despite reportedly attending their captain's wedding on the previous day, the Waterford side lost by just a goal and David Murphy and Peter Dwyer showed that they have what it takes to bother Macroom.



Macroom, who had William O'Riordan and Anthony O'Donoghue on the AUL Youths side of 1998/99, have shown this season hat they are the team for the big occasion. They have won away to Leeside and Greenmount Rangers in the league and scored an impressive 2 -1 away win over Ballinhassig in an earlier round of the MJC.



The Mid Cork side now have their own grounds and dressing rooms complex and their next task in this area is to develop the playing surface and add a car park. On the field, manager O'Riordan's wish is for an AOH and Premier double or at least one of the coveted pair.



The Macroom panel is: Shane O'Leary, Alan Lynch, John Rowan, Norman Kelly, Cormac Linehan, Darra Deasy, Dan Kelleher, Brendan O'Mahony, Darren Ring, Kevin Sheehan, Richie Coleman, Liam Shine, Chris Kirby, Anthony O'Donoghue, William O'Riordan, Tim Corcoran, Red Kirby, Michael Murphy, Tim Murphy, Mark Twohig and Chris Murphy.



Kelly formerly played with Tramore Athletic while Corcoran has returned from Ballincollig's MSL side. Red Kirby and Coleman have been promoted from last season's B team.



The club, which gratefully acknowledges the support received from Looney Car Sales, T.P. Macroom currently field three underage sides and, interestingly, the U12s are skippered by David Golden who is a first cousin of current Cobh Ramblers striker Donal Golden whose father came from the town. William O'Riordan is the U12 manager. Darra Deasy looks after the U14s and their skipper is Brendan O'Connell. The minors, who play in AUL 1, are skippered by Brian Dunton, managed by Paul Kingston.
